Melinda Myers

Melinda Myers, best known for her practical, gardener-friendly approach to gardening, is the author of the recently released Birds and Blooms Ultimate Garden Guide and the winner of the 2003 Garden Globe award for radio talent. Melinda has more than 20 years of horticulture experience in both hands-on and instructional settings. She has a master’s degree in horticulture, is a certified arborist and is a horticultural instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Outside the classroom, Melinda shares her expertise through a variety of media outlets. Her most recent book, The Birds and Blooms Ultimate Garden Guide, is available through Reiman Publications’ site http://www.countrystorecatalog.com. She hosts “Great Lakes Gardener,” which is seen on PBS stations throughout the Midwest, the “Plant Doctor” show on 620 WTMJ radio in Milwaukee, and appears regularly on WTMJ-TV, the Milwaukee NBC affiliate. She also writes the monthly “Gardeners’ Questions” column for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and is a contributing editor and columnist for Birds and Blooms magazine.

In addition, Melinda has written several books, including The Garden Book for Wisconsin, My Wisconsin Garden: A Gardener's Journal, Month by Month Gardening in Wisconsin, Minnesota Horticultural Society's Minnesota Gardener's Guide, Month-by-Month Gardening in Minnesota, and The Perfect Lawn Midwest series.

Her 13 years experience at the University of Wisconsin Extension allowed Melinda to work with backyard, community, and master gardeners throughout Wisconsin. In addition, she began the Master Garden Program in Milwaukee County. As Milwaukee's Assistant City Forester, Melinda helped manage the city’s street trees, boulevards, and green spaces. She has worked with the Young Adult Conservation Corps supervising crews that maintain University of Wisconsin urban test gardens and provide trail repair and other conservation work. In addition, Melinda is a horticulture consultant to numerous community and beautification groups.

For her work and media presence, Melinda has received recognition and numerous awards, including the 2003 Garden Globe Award for radio talent and the 1998 Quill and Trowel award from the Garden Writers Association of America, and the 1998 Garden Communicator's Award from the American Nursery and Landscape Association
